How many times have you been in a restaurant having a meal and been moaning about it to your fellow diners yet when asked by the waiter if everything is OK said yes? And how many times have you been to a snowboarding competition and had an issue with the setup, the judging, the cost or amount of riding you’ve done and actually approached the organisers?

Well guess what, if you don’t speak up or provide feedback things never improve, if the organisers don’t know that there’s a problem then how can they fix it?

Which brings me on to the point of this post. After my last blog post and some comments I’d littered around on Facebook the team at Soul Sports approached me to hear my side of the story, subsequently I have put myself forward as a self-appointed unofficial rider rep/agony aunt/bitching post and if at all possible, positive feedback provider on behalf of the snowboarders and free-skiers that compete in the UK.

I know from experience and conversations that I have had with a lot of the riders/parents/overseas outcasts that are involved in the UK scene that not everyone is happy, that many of us have issues and a range of things we think could be done better or differently, but do accept that we are not aware of all the considerations that affect the organisers decision-making. I also know that a lot of you don’t want to say anything to the event organisers/powers-that-be because you are concerned that it might affect your competition placings or the potential for you to gain sponsorship.

So what I want to do is give you the opportunity to vent your respective spleens and contact me with your feedback. I can then act as the middle-man and pass this feedback on to Spencer Claridge in a way that if you wish to remain anonymous you can, but also giving them the opportunity to get some constructive feedback from you. They will then respond by way of an FAQ so that they can a) clarify the reasons behind the decisions made, b) inform us about the issues organisers and staff face, and the work put in, c) share with us ideas that they have for the future, and d) ultimately, improve the events for all concerned.

This is your opportunity to speak your mind and hopefully get something done about it. I have warned them that I won’t be censoring the emails but please do try to be constructive and not abusive. I’m not doing this on behalf of Soul Sports I’m doing this because I think it’s about time we quit bitching and actually set about informing those in charge of the things that annoy us. I’d like to add that this is not solely about the British Snow Tour but the wider UK snowboarding & free-skiing scene, so if you have things you want to say about other competitions, events etc. then I’m more than happy to pass that on as well. If you would rather go direct to Spencer then I know he’d be more than happy to hear from you.

Please use the form below as a starting point, I’ve included fields for contact info in case you want me to contact you for a more detailed chat/email conversation but I won’t pass on any name or contact info unless you expressly give me permission

The summer comp season is running a bit late this year to be honest. We had a great start to it with the Southern Freestyle Series but there’s quite a break now until August when it all kicks off again. The difficult thing for me this year has been deciding which ones to enter. Normally I can make my choice based on location and existing plans but unfortunately this year there are way too many clashes in the competition calendar so I’ve had to look at things from a different perspective. Each year I have been able to do the Westbeach Snowflex Series AND the British Snow Tour but this year 2 legs of each competition clash with each other. Normally the Snow Tour dates are announced at the previous season’s British Championships in Laax, so other competition organisers are able to plan their dates around the main TTR ranked tour for the UK. This year however the dates weren’t announced until yesterday, when all the other comp dates had been planned and announced….so it leaves us shredders with a dilemma.

I spent last night pondering it with Jools and we’ve come to the conclusion that I’ll get more out of doing the Snowflex Series than I will the Snow Tour. I may still be able to do the MK Big Air leg of the Snow Tour but based on the last 2 years, the kickers won’t be to my liking and I’ll either kill myself on the large kicker again or feel like a complete wuss for stepping down to the mini-size, so we’re leaving that pencilled in as a maybe and we’ll go if we have the spare cash at the time.

It’s such a shame that with such a great scene in the UK that the comp organisers can’t work together to get comps on seperate weekends, I can understand smaller local comps clashing with those at slopes at the other end of the country but when there are two main, established tours in existence and two out of 3 legs clash with each other it does make the conspiracy theorist in you conasider whether it’s been done on purpose.

So what’s made me choose the Westbeach Snowflex Series over the indoor legs of the British Snow Tour? Well I realised that despite the TTR ranking points I would get from the Snow Tour there’s very little else about the competition that will benefit me. With minimal practice time and 2 competition runs I just won’t get the riding time to progress as much as I will do in the Snowflex Series which is a jam format with a 2 run final. Add into that the consistent nature of Snowflex kickers and I’ll at least be able to use them as day-long practice sessions even if I don’t manage to beat the kids to the finals. Of course there’s also the issue of prizes! Thankfully the Snow Tour is doing a dry slope weekender with all 3 disciplines at the Norfolk Snowsports centre in Norwich so I’ll be able to shred some plastic and pick up some ranking points at that instead.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the Brits this season as well. With people already talking about not returning if it goes back to Laax (it’s quite costly) and others wondering whether they’ll go no matter where it’s held (for a range of personal & political reasons) it will be interesting to see whether the dates are announced quickly in a bid to get people signed up and committed or whether they’ll wait to see what other camps, competitions and gatherings are advertised before they make their move.

If you want to register for the Westbeach Snowflex Series you can do so here. I’d post a link for the Snow Tour as well but their site’s not sorted yet.

It’s not easy being self employed, and it’s even harder being part of a bootstrap funded start-up. What with the hours you put in to the business, the stresses you face when team members can’t cope with the stresses and decide start-up world isn’t for them hence leaving you to it and the pressures to keep the business cash positive while you’re waiting for sales to really take off could all take a serious toll if you let them. I’m trying hard not to let the glass half emptiers win the battle for my sanity though. Hugh MacLeod’s gapingvoid cartoons help me a great deal though and I highly recommend signing up to his daily newsletter. This cartoon “An Easy Life” is probably my current favourite at the moment and I’ll probably buy a copy when I have a few spare pennies.

As ever work is pushing my snowboarding to the back-burner, so it’s a good job I love the work I do and truly believe in the ideas behind Synuron. Having worked on the project for almost 18 months before it got canned it’s great that those of us with nerves of steel and the guts for hard work are pulling together and pooling our resources to try and make a success of it.

So while a lot of the people I know are looking forward to a summer of glacial snowboarding and weeks sunning themselves, I’ll be splitting my time between work, more work and as many snowboarding competitions as I can get to. Hopefully I’ll reap the rewards as the business takes off but in the meantime I’ll be working on technology implementations, demos and account management while I try to help organisations in health & social care improve their HR and recruitment processes, in turn helping them save money, improve patient care and focus on what they need to to get their jobs done without unnecessary distractions and administration. So if I’m a bit quiet on the blog front I apologise, but don’t sit back feeling neglected, leave me a comment and nudge me into action.

Chatham dry slope did it again…not only did it provide the venue for this weekend’s second leg of the Southern Freestyle Series but it proved it has its own special micro-climate! Every time I’ve visited Chatham for a snowboarding comp it’s turned into the hottest weekend of the year meaning we’ve all melted in the heat and all our kit (in fact in some cases even the kit has melted). I had hoped that as it was only May as opposed to July/August that we might have got away with a cooler day but no, baking hot was the order of the day, great for those watching but not so great for the riders.

The Chatham crew had filled their large slope with almost all of the toys they own, although luckily they’d only put half of their long box out meaning they were able to do a quick swap for the other half when someone fell on it and went through the top. It was the usual chaotic mix of kickers and rails with a good mix of lines, some feeling quite natural to ride, others requiring a more random approach line but everyone was having a great time. The day saw an improved turnout amongst the snowboarders with 27 hitting the slope, and the day saw a good mix of seasoned locals used to the Permasnow surface and those who were new to dryslope or who were used to the (IMHO) more ride-able Snowflex surface of Warmwell. Some stuck it out and got the hang of it while others decided to enjoy spectating rather than struggling to ride but the day was fun for everyone.

Once again the competition ran as a jam session, fun throw-down hour and a 2 run final and it kept to time as well (something that’s a bit weird for a snowboarding comp) . There were too many good boys hitting the toys for any girls to make the overall final this time round but we put in a good showing nonetheless. I finished 4th in the over 14 women and 11th overall in the snowboarders so I was pretty pleased.

Unfortunately for me the edge was taken off my enjoyment by having to ride Permasnow in the hot weather, having had 1 board ruined by the stuff and seen friend’s boards and skis also die in a session I wasn’t really able to get into the flow. Thankfully Ryan at Humanity’s special base construction that he’s used on my board held up and my Plastictastic has survived and is now raring to get down to Warmwell for the series final on 12th June. I can’t wait to get back on their Snowflex kicker and if the final is half as organised as the first 2 legs then it’ll be a great day.

Once again a massive shout of thanks has to go to the Southern Freestyle Club for trying to spur on a dryslope revival….long may it continue. I had a great day and it was even better to see some new people getting hooked on plastic!

Here’s a slideshow of Jool’s shots from the day, if anyone wants a copy of the shots just drop him an email at JoolsSmithPhotos

Everything about me pretty much aches today, from soles of my feet to my neck I feel battered and bruised, but I’m still happy. Yesterday was the first leg of the Southern Freestyle Series at Bracknell and I headed over there despite my hatred of the Permasnow surface that covers the slope because I miss the atmosphere of dry slope competitions and because I wanted to support the local scene, even though it’s not that local to me! Bracknell was the slope where I learnt to ski, back in the days of TechMat2000 (kind of like Dendix) and I actually wish it was still covered in that as it would have been much easier to ride.

Permasnow is like riding ice, it’s hard to get an edge on and almost impossible to stop or speed check without falling over and it took me about 5 runs before I could find the biting point (I find it much easier to get used to Snowflex & Dendix if I haven’t ridden them for a while). It was quite funny seeing the non-local riders making their first runs as we were all falling over and looking like beginners. We soon got the hang of it though, and the weather was pretty much perfect for dry slope, light drizzle meant it was running at a good speed and the cool temperature meant my board didn’t get melted and ruined (as happened to my brand new board a few years ago). I’m really impressed with the base the guys at Humanity Snow have put on my Plastictastic, it rode well throughout the comp and I was really glad it’s sturdy base coped well with the surface.

The comp itself was quite quiet on the snowboarder front. The Chatham crew were in Las Vegas so there were only 9 of us. This was more than made up for by the skiers though so overall there were about 40 competitors, cheering each other on and laughing at the slams. It was definitely the most fun comp I’ve been to in ages though, it was great to be back on dry slope where people are supportive, encouraging and welcoming to all (something I think can be lacking in the indoor snow scene). It was also great to have a comp that ran to time, had riders briefings and a structured judging system. For once it seemed that riders felt they shouldn’t have been placed as highly as they were rather than all the other competitors questioning the positions of the winners.

The comp was run as a 90 minute jam session giving us all a chance to ride the multiple lines of the course and try and get a good mix of tricks down. It was great to be able to try some new stuff without worrying about falling over, just getting back up and trying again until you’d got it nailed and then moving on to the next bail. Then it was the fun trick throw down with the judges handing out Haribo and other prizes in exchange for some good tricks on each of the sections. I wasn’t sure that filling Jake Terry with sweets was a good idea but it seemed to have done the trick, not only did he win the under 14 men’s category but he made it through to the top six eventually finishing 2nd overall out of all the snowboarders.

The final itself was run as a best of two run final, giving those that qualified the opportunity to show if they could perform under pressure as well as in a more relaxed jam format. The top 6 skiers and top 6 snowboarders regardless of age or sex made it to the final and it was great that out of the 6 boarders there were 2 girls in the final. Unfortunately I slammed on both my runs so despite finishing 2nd in the over 14 girls group I failed to beat the boys and finish in the top 3. I’m not going to complain though, I think the right people ended up in the right positions and we all had a great deal of fun doing so. A big shout out has to go to Sabrina, the girl I was up against, as it was her first dryslope comp and apart from a session at Calshot (which if you’ve been there will know it doesn’t really give you a chance to really get that dry slope feeling) her first time on dry slope.

The prizes were brilliant, ranging from boots to helmets & jackets and I came away with a helmet, shoulder bag and snowboard bag, so that combined with the fact that I got 5 hours riding for my £15 entry fee made it more than worthwhile!

I had a really great day so thanks to everyone involved in the organisation, sponsorship & judging. I’m really looking forward to the next legs at Chatham (22nd May) and Warmwell (12th June).

I have just one request, please can we have less drum and bass and more hip hop in the decks? Thankfully I was wired for sound via my iPod and i360 headband but I know that the majority of riders and spectators I spoke to didn’t really enjoy the tunes.

Thanks to Brian Miller (Dad) for capturing some of my slams…..as you can see I haven’t lost my touch!!

Well it’s been a brilliant first week out here in Laax, Switzerland. Admittedly we’ve had the full range of weather, from 2 days white-out and powder to sunny, bluebird, Spring slush….but it’s been great to be on a mountain again for the first time in a year, and even better to spend the week getting some coaching in the pipe and on the kickers so that hopefully I can put in a good performance in the British Championships this week.

It’s also been great to give my 156 Plastictastic a really good test and I’ve been really impressed with how it performs. It’s been great on the kickers, which at 12-14m tables have been much bigger than I’ve been hitting indoors on my 150 but it’s also felt great in the pipe (much better than I’ve been feeling in it, that’s for sure!) and it’s been cutting through the slush and choppy snow as well. So it’s certainly turned out to be my perfect all-mountain park board.

Tomorrow is the first day of competition, and so I’m hoping the super speedy base helps me get to the front of the pack in the boarder-cross, or at the very least lets me olly over anyone that falls in front of me.

It’s been a while since I’ve done a post, but all the snow shredding that friends have been getting up to has been making me exceedingly jealous. It’s always a bit depressing posting about indoor snow while everyone else is in the mountains but after having to cancel my month away in January due to work commitments I’m a week away from heading out to Laax, Switzerland for a two week trip.

I can’t wait to get back out to what is probably my favourite resort (followed closely by Mammoth) for a week of coaching followed by the British Snowboard Championships. I’ll be competing in all 4 disciplines, boardercross, big air, half pipe and slopestyle and I’m looking forward to giving my Plastictastic 156 a proper testing as so far it’s only been used on a 135m slope and that’s really not enough distance to allow it to really get up to full speed! I’m hoping it will help me quickly get used to the difference in speed required for the larger kickers I’ll be faced with (the Brits course is based on the course used for the Burton European Open).

I’ve had 3 excellent practice sessions recently, I’ve been lucky enough to have some more coaching from the crew at Maverix and it’s been good to get back on a board after a 12 week break. I’m looking forward to trying to convert what I’ve learnt indoors to the bigger park in Laax. If you want to read a bit more about the Maverix courses then take a look at this article from Cooler magazine.

I’ll do my best to keep you all updated on how I get on while I’m out there.

I’m stoked to announce (in a slightly more official way than this Tweet) that I’m now sponsored by i360. They’re a US company that are just moving into the European market and they design music infused apparel. So I should shortly be rocking headbands & beanies that not only hold my iPod and pump music straight into my ears but I’ll no longer be tangled in wires while I shred! It also means that one of my reasons for not completing my Couch to 5km running course is now invalid (I can’t do it because my headphones fall out and it interrupts my stride). Of course I’m sure I’ll find another reason not to run (it’s dark at night, I’m tired after work etc) but maybe I’ll get at least one run in before I go back to slacking. So a huge thank you to them for hooking me up.

I also managed to hit the snow this weekend, Jools had to head up to Hemel to get some photos of some of our friends so I had a chilled session on their boxes practicing some presses and spins while giving my new Laurus face wrap a proper test. It was a great session and not only did I stay snuggly in my new jacket (cheers Sputnik) and facewrap but Jools got actual photographic proof that I held a tail press! I was so pleased he managed to catch it because although I’d been able to press my Plastictastic on the flat I felt like I wasn’t really committing on the boxes. It turns out I am! So it’s good to know that the flex on it is as good as I thought.

Apart from shredding things have been insane on the work front, I’ve been travelling the country to visit NHS Trusts and tell them about the NHSE Membership I’ve been working on for the last year and I’ve also been working on the presentations we’ll be giving at the first of our Discovery Sessions next week and then the NHSE Conference the week after.

I’ve also submitted my application for a slot in the Burton European Open, I got a place last year but had to pull out due to injury so I’m hoping I get a place again this year. I really want to give it a go and as I’ll be out in Laax anyway I’ll be pretty gutted if I don’t at least get to ride the qualification round. I should hear at the end of the November, so until then I’ll just be practicing as much as I can.

Jools & I were invited to the recent night shoot by Maverix Snow Camps to get some shots of the instructors while they did some videoing for their promo movie.

Acting as flash-monkey for Jools I didn’t get a chance to ride but I did use it as an opportunity to test out the face wraps I’d just been sent by my latest sponsor, Laurus. Not only were Jools and I both kept toasty warm while in a giant freezing fridge but even when the snow blowers were running the fleece lined wraps managed to avoid getting soggy and freezing to our faces.

Here’s one of Jools’ test shots of me in my Uni-Sexy Swagger Long wrap.

This Saturday was the British Snow Tour Indoor Big Air Championships at MK SNO!zone & seeing as how it’s a 2 star TTR event we were expecting the kicker to be pretty good, it turned out though that SNO!zone’s tape measure was slightly inaccurate and what should have been a 9m kicker was actually 14m (or 15.5m to the sweet spot)! Having had a chat with a couple of the guys it sounded doable as long as you straight-lined it in when you looked at it’s shape in comparison to the seriously whippy mid-sized 5m kicker it looked much nicer to hit. After a couple of runs down the non-park slope to warm up my legs and contact lenses I moved over and took a couple of run-throughs over the small kicker, just checking the drop in line and landing. The big kicker looked nice and I knew if I committed to my drop in that my new Humanity Plastictastic 156 would give me more than enough speed, added to that Jools was giving me the thumbs up as I was going up the lift as well.

At this point I should admit that I hate being the first person to hit a toy, in previous years I’ve been able to rely on Jamie Nicholls or one of the other kids acting as a test rider and I can bow to their judgement with regards to speed, how the kicker’s riding etc, unfortunately though they were all riding in the 2nd qualification group so if I was going to step up and hit it I’d have to do it on my own. I looked again and after a bit of banter with Shiner the Technical Delegate for the day where we argued over the size (I said as far as I was concerned it was 9m as that’s what the plan said, he said 14.5m) I decided it was definitely doable, took a deep breath and dropped in. Straight off the drop in ramp, over the first lip, straight into the kicker (good girl, no speed checks) and up into the air……..oooooops! Yes the kicker was way whippier than it looked and the moment I was in the air it started to feel a bit wrong, my weight was too far back and I was tipping in the air. Anyone that’s been in this situation will know that at this point time slows down, I was a long way up and I realised that my best chance of surviving this was to tip my weight so I was going to fall on my front not my back, bring my arms in, relax and wait for the impact. It seemed like I had a long time to wait as I took up my “frog” position and started to plummet, then the ground hit, I bounced on my front, hitting my chin and then I must have bounced onto my back because I came to rest half way down the landing with my head pointing down and my feet back up towards the kickers. I wasn’t in pain, knew I wasn’t broken but I was totally winded so when I looked up to see people rush in to check on me I signalled I was ok and let them unstrap my board so I could roll over and get off the landing. A huge thanks to the First Aider, Col Mytton and Jools Smith who were all over to me pretty much the moment I’d landed. A pretty impressive feat for Jools considering he was on the run in side of the kicker capturing these shots…..

..he then had to pelt round to check I was alive! Thankfully I was and once I got my breath back I was back up the top grabbing a drink of water before getting back to it (all be it on the 5m kicker). I was quite gutted not to have landed it but I think I impressed (and scared) everyone by giving it a go. For a while I doubted myself and wondered if it was my mistake and whether I’d misjudged my ability, it turns out I hadn’t though as over the course of the 2nd qualification when the guys were hitting it, it became apparent that it was too whippy a kicker and a lot of people came a cropper much worse than I had. Numerous guys ended up visiting the local hospital and quite a few more admitted to being scared. These weren’t poor riders but the cream of the UK and it’s a shame that a quarter of all entrants took a bad fall on the main kicker! I count myself very lucky to have escaped with a slightly scraped chin and some aches from the impact.

All in all it was a fun session, even with the aches I was feeling and I was stoked to qualify for the final in 3rd place. Unfortunately I didn’t manage to hang on to it so finished 4th overall and 1st in Masters, still I figure I can live with being beaten by a 12 year old, a 14 year old and an under 30 year old!

To wrap up the day nicely I had a really nice message that put the icing on the cake and I’m pleased to announce I now have a new sponsor, Laurus. Laurus make handmade face wraps, and I’m looking forward to wearing them over the course of the Winter, not just on the slopes but on my commute to work if it gets cold enough!

I’ve just had a really hectic weekend, after a long week at work I headed 85 miles from home to Norwich Ski Centre in Norfolk for the British Artificial Snowboard Championships, nick-named the mini-Brits. This was the first of this year’s series of UK based snowboarding & skiing competitions and was ranked as a TTR 1 star event, the upcoming indoor snow comps are all ranked as 2 star events, and comprised of boardercross, big air and slopestyle over the course of the weekend. It was great to see everyone together again as most of us don’t get the chance to catch up over the Summer and I hadn’t seen most of the riders since the British Championships in Laax in April.

The weekend kicked off on a scorching Saturday with the boardercross, which took place on the main Dendix slope, and we each took 2 timed runs. We then moved through to some races with 2-3 people battling it out at the same time. Don’t be fooled, Dendix is not easy stuff to ride and it’s diamond shaped sturcture means falls can get nasty, luckily though the slams I had in warm-up coincided nicely with where I’d placed my padding and I survived in 1 piece. I finished the morning session in 2nd place in the Masters (over 30) age group. The afternoon was spent sessioning the kicker for the (big) air competition. Unfortunately the slope was running quite slowly and so if you didn’t land in quite the right spot then your board stopped and you kept going….cue whiplash for me! I’d decided to try and step things up, with only 3 in my group I figured I might as well try the spins I’d been working on in practice. It didn’t work out though and although I did a really nice BS180 Method I sat down on my landing, my second run was even worse and I managed a big FS90 to slam. The way I see it though if I’d landed the tricks I’d have been in with a chance, both girls in my group are trying 540s so I had no option but to step things up.

Sunday was slopestyle day and it was a bit cooler, unfortunately the slope was still running really slowly, so much so that the judges had the toys swapped around as people weren’t able to get enough speed to hit the higher scoring line the way it was originally set up. After a few practice runs I managed to work out the line I needed to keep my speed and my first comp run was a smooth and clean frontside nose press, followed by a nose press and then a 50:50 to boardslide, switch out over the up-down shark’s fin. It all went wrong on my second run though, I did a nice tail press to switch over the first box, but slipped out on my switch frontside on the next box ending nicely in a perfect faceplant. Hopping up the slope to try and get enough speed for the shark’s fin, I tried but failed and made it half way up the up box before having to jump off. I just missed out on a place in the final by coming 5th overall but my first run was enough to get me 2nd in the Masters.

So I finished the weekend with 2 silvers and a bronze, not bad going considering the sticky conditions. The big air and slopestyle will both get me started in this season’s TTR ranking and hopefully my luck will hold for this Saturday when I head to Milton Keynes SNO!zone for the British Indoor Big Air championships.
On 26th August I arrived at the Liberty University Snowflex Mountain having been up for 44 hours (I had to do a full day of work on the 25th before starting my journey) and travelled from Chelmsford to Lynchburg, VA via Hemel Hempstead, Manchester, Paris & Washington. As part of what has been referred to by the media “a group of UK Pro riders” we travelled out for the Grand Opening of the new Snowflex slope, the first full size outdoor slope of it’s kind in the USA, and I have to say a huge thank you to Brian & Terry of Snowflex and Wayne Taylor (AKA Snowskate) for inviting me along on what I can only describe as my best snowboarding trip ever! Not only did I meet a great bunch of new friends but I got to introduce Snowflex to people who’ve either never ridden it or have only just started. I also met a bunch of my Humanity team mates and collected my new snowboards so it made for a great week.

I admit to totally wussing out of riding on the day we got there, both Katie Summerhayes and I decided to leave the guys to it, 44 hours with hardly any sleep screamed “accident waiting to happen to me” so I just walked around the slope watching and just chatting to the people who had come up to either watch their friends or just see what was going on at this new slope. The slope is amazing and currently consists of 3 kickers (a knuckle, a 3 foot and a 6 foot kicker) all of which can give you massive air. It was great to see that the locals were already getting the hang of it, with a young lad (the size that Jamie Nicholls used to be) of 9 year old giving 360s a try off the knuckle. There are also 2 boxes, a straight box & a down flat down kink which are placed on the intermediate slope. The slope is also going to be expanded as part of Phase 2 and so the riding area is going to pretty much double and they’re bound to add more jibs to the collection over time. There’s also a nursery slope for beginners to make their first turns on or to tube on.

After a late start on the Thursday we spent the afternoon playing ball and sunning ourselves in the uni pool (after a drive around town to find the outdoor pool with waterslides was closed as school had started) before heading to the slope to ride. I picked up my 150 Humanity Plastictastic, got my bindings screwed in and hit the slopes. After a couple of runs down the main slope to get the feel of the Snowflex and the new snowboard I was ready to start pushing it.

My first reaction to the new snowboard was that it perfect, it’s got plenty of spring and pop for ollies and is a lot flexier than I’m used to but without feeling soggy. I headed up to the kicker drop in and had a chat with Wayne Taylor about drop in speeds for the big kicker. I’d decided to go all out and hit the big one first off because I knew if I hit the 3 footer I’d be too scared to step it up, especially if I stacked it. So after a couple of ride -throughs over the knuckle to get the hang f the drop in and feel the gradient of the run out I went for it. Dropped in, quick speed check and straightened up for the main 6 footer….up the kicker, in the air and I landed! I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised that the 150 handled the landing without any problem at all, and even more importantly there wasn’t any chatter on the run in either. I spent the rest of the evening working on various grabs and just trying to go bigger each time.

Friday saw us riding again and I was even brave enough to give a FS180 a try on the 6 foot kicker. I landed cleanly, but girly legs took over half way down the landing and I sat down. That was my only spin off the big kicker of the trip (it just felt a little on the large side for me to keep spinning on it) but I did get some good spins off the 3 footer while I was there.

Saturday was the big opening ceremony and it was seriously hot out there! So hot in fact that I put my riding shirt in the bucket of ice with the water in it to cool it down before we hit the slopes in the early afternoon sun. After the sky-diver had landed on the slopes and skiied down the hill I was the first over the kicker….it seemed like a good idea to volunteer to go first initially as it meant that when we started doing named tricks I’d be at the front to do a straight air (rather than being at the back and getting stuck with a 1080!), but as I was waiting to drop in it dawned on me that I was going to be the first person that the waiting crowds (of around 3,200 people) would see. All went well though and although I had a hand down on landing I managed to stay upright and not stack in front of everyone watching or get squashed by the riders who were following me in in quick succession.

After some “Trickology” to show the various tricks possible on skis and snowboards we had a quick team comp. I was part of UK 2, consisting of myself, Will Smith, Matt Macwhirter and Wayne Taylor. Unfortunately UK1 (Jamie Nicholls, Andy Nudds, Woodsy & Katie Summerhayes beat us in the crowd vote and went through to the final against on of the US teams. UK 1 were amazing and won the crowd vote overall. Their run can be seen in this video shown on the local news (in which I also feature!). It was also great to have Dragon Goggles Team Manager, Sam Nelson, acting as half of the MC crew, it meant that there was someone there who knew our names and what we were doing and made sure we got plenty of shout outs and support from the crowd. Russ Shea from Dopeshots was also on hand with his trusty camera so hopefully there’ll be some shots from him of us doing our thing.

We rode again on Sunday and as it was after the opening I think everyone was pushing it a little bit more, the pressure was off and people were less worried about hurting themselves. I used the time to keep working on big hits and grab variations and I had a great time. Katie stepped it up to throw down some massive 720s on skis and all the guys were putting in some huge spins. Everyone who hit it agreed that it’s the best kicker we’ve all hit and certainly the best kicker on Snowflex.

Unfortunately all good things have to come to an end, and so we left Lynchburg on Monday morning and headed to the airport following a quick tourist stop off in Washington, where we saw the White House and the Washington Memorial. Arriving back in the UK yesterday it was great to log in to Facebook and Twitter and catch up on the buzz of the opening and the excitement of all our new friends. It was great to meet everyone from Liberty, the US Team and my boys from Humanity! We were all made to feel so welcome and I can’t wait to see how everyone progresses over the coming months.

Thanks again to Brian, Terry & Wayne for making this trip possible and for taking an old girl like me along with the kids. It meant a lot to be included and I hope I did you proud!

Here’s another movie from the team at Liberty University, great work from Hannah & Ena, I can’t wait to see what else you come up with.

Yes that’s right, I’m currently under a self imposed shred ban ahead of my trip to Lynchburg, VA for the opening of Liberty University’s Snowflex slope. It’s probably a good thing too, as Becky Hammond one the skiers due to come on the trip has had a nasty fall by the sound of it and has a sprained back & twisted pelvis and can’t ride for 5 weeks. Not wanting to be a big fat meany and stop Jools riding as well we headed to the Snow Centre on Friday night, he’s been buzzing since he was there last weekend, & seeing as how I’m abandoning him for a week it would have been evil to say we couldn’t go because I wasn’t riding. Instead I decided to practice with the video camera and I’ve edited this mini movie together. Since I did this filming we’ve bought a new tripod with a smoother pan action (and that weighs A LOT less!) and also worked out how to use the focus properly.

So here it is for your viewing pleasure!

Another weekend has flown by and in 218 hours I’ll be hopping in a car to Manchester to catch my flight to the USA for the opening of Liberty University’s Snowflex slope! I’ve also done my last shred session between now and then (I find it pays not to tempt fate too much). On Friday I switched back to my Craft so that Jools could make the most of a session at Hemel Snow Centre on what was my Forum Manual, but now belongs to him….he certainly seemed to have fun on it and was back hitting rails and boxes in no time. Of course there’s very little evidence of this because although I stopped shredding pretty early on, he couldn’t cope with not being on photo duty and swiped my video camera and took over on the filming front! Before I stopped for the evening I finally managed to get up the courage to spin over Hemel’s gap kicker, managing two cleanly landed frontside 180s before the kicker got a bit ruttedand I caught an edge on take off. Luckily I stayed mostly upright and stalling at 90 I landed and scuffed out. Not wanting to break myself I took it easy for the rest of the evening,e specially as after the Manual my super narrow Craft wasn’t really feeling that stable on the rails.

Here’s a quick edit that Jools has done, it looks like my new laptop and Sony Vegas are working rather nicely together, and I’m looking forward to getting a chance to have a play myself while I’m away!

My new boards are being built this week! Even better, in 2 weeks time I should (if all goes to plan) be in the USA en route to Lynchburg, Virginia to pick them up ready for the opening of the Snowflex slope. Jools, is of course stoked by this because it means he can take on ownership of my recently purchased Forum Manual, which he’s actually claiming from this Friday so he can try it out at Hemel.

If you’re not an avid fan of me on Twitter then you might have missed seeing the design of my 150, but you can now not only view it, but purchase it, via the Humanity Snowboards shop. Obviously I’ll be doing a full review after my first shred but if you’re yearning for something new and can’t wait for that then it’s worth snapping up one of the pre-sale boards for $299 (Discount code 1STHMNTY50). If you find that the pre-sale offer has closed then hit me up for my discount code.

I managed to get 2 snowboarding sessions in this weekend, Friday night at the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead and Saturday at MK SNO!zone for another all day camp with Maverix. I’m taking it easy(ish) at the moment because it’’s only 16 days before I head ot the States, so after 3 hits and 3 over-shoots of the gap kicker I was glad that @girlygeekdom & @actionlamb arrived for the inaugural Snow Tuttle! As there were 3 of us present we were most certainly quorate (according to Rule 1). It was the first time either of them had ridden at Hemel and the first time they’d ridden since their holiday earlier this year (which was pretty much Sarah’s first time on a snowboard). According to their Tweets on Saturday they both had fun and Steve even did his first boxes! Hopefully there’ll be more Snow Tuttles in the future, if anyone wants to hook up for one then let me know.

Saturday was another fun day with coaching on kickers and rails, the kicker was quite small which made it hard to really get my knees up on my spins without me feeling rushed and panicked so I took things steady and just focused on getting the take off right (which in turn meant my arms were mostly below shoulder level). The afternoon was spent on the low box rail and I worked on making sure I managed to get some new tricks under my belt. I’d tried frontside noseslides at Castleford a few weeks ago but wasn’t really committing to get them fully tweaked out. Yesterday I was really pleased because not only did I manage to get a regular frontside nose with my board at 90 degrees but I managed to get the same trick nailed switch!

I was even more pleased that I was really going for the tweak and getting the board at right angles rather than the 45ish degrees I was getting at Cas.

This week’s going to be a busy one, I’m in Nottingham on Tuesday for work and then back over to Hemel on Friday for a shred with Anna who owns Sputnik Snowboard Shop (and sponsors me). We’ll also be heading over to the shop so I can check out the shiny new toys that have been delivered so far! I’m just waiting for some new boots to come in as I noticed at the weekend that mine are starting to come unstuck around the edges, and I’m hoping the Burton Molotovs will have arrived by then too…..I love this time of year! Add to that the fact that my snowboards from Humanity are being pressed this week and I think it’s going to be a good month on the new kit front!
