Those of you who work away a lot will understand what I’m getting at when I ask “Can I go home soon?”. It’s not that working away and staying in hotels is really horrible, it’s just that it’s not home, you can’t eat what you want, do what you want and do things when you want. You’re always having to think about work ( i.e. can I leave the office before 10pm today?), your colleagues (do I have to eat with them again tonight or can I hide in my room)…..oh and then there’s the fact that you go home on the weekend and spend two days placating loved ones and doing your washing, only for it to start al over again on a Monday morning with a 5am drive to the airport!
I actually really enjoy my job, the boyf is coping really well with me being away for days at a time ( I think the new XBox helped!) but hotel hopping is getting to be a bit tiresome.
There is however light at the end of the tunnel (all be it a double edged sword of hope), my next project involves the annual pay review and as such means I’ll have to spend a lot of my time in London. The down side is managing the admin side of a pay review for 20,000 odd staff in a company with huge union input. Of course it also means back to my daily commute of 90+ mins on trains and tubes, with no seat and a hot summer looming……
…..actually maybe working away is better….an hour commute, a seat and someone to change the sheets and do the washing up!
I feel your disatisfaction of being in hotels all the time. People think it seems nice but it really wears thin after a week or two. My last stint was a year and a bit, of working out of a suitcase for most of the week. I hope you’re in some sort of hotel points scheme for your trouble, at the very least!

Dave used to work on client sites across the UK and live in hotels during the week. It sucked after the novelty wore off. He put on weight from eating out all the time; he never wanted to go to restaurants with me; the long drives at the start and end of the week got dangerous when he was tired; and he couldn’t do any regular evening activities.
